Jess Tucker sticks her neck out for a stranger—the buzz is someone in the dorm is a trans girl. So Tucker says it’s her, even though it’s not, to stop the finger pointing. She was an out lesbian in high school, and she figures she can stare down whatever gets thrown her way in college. It can’t be that bad.

Ella Ramsey is making new friends at Freytag University, playing with on-campus gamers and enjoying her first year, but she’s rocked by the sight of a slur painted on someone else’s door. A slur clearly meant for her, if they’d only known.

New rules, old prejudices, personal courage, private fear. In this stunning follow-up to the groundbreaking Being Emily, Rachel Gold explores the brave, changing landscape where young women try to be Just Girls.

Imagine coming out as transgender to some trans-phobic students in the middle of your college cafeteria line. Now, compound that scenario with the fact that you are actually living as and comfortable with your birth gender – you were simply trying to shut up some closed-minded individuals and protect a total stranger, since they'd learned SOMEONE on campus was indeed transgender.

This is the premise behind Rachel Gold's “Just Girls”. “Just Girls” is a follow-up to the author's earlier “Being Emily”, but is not a sequel. (Readers of the second book will learn how the main characters of the first book can show up in the second without it truly being a sequel.) Ms. Gold provides us with “a (school) year in the life” of some students at fictitious Freytag University in Ohio. The pacing of the book feels more like a ride on a merry-go-round than a roller coaster, never taking us too high or too low, nor too fast nor too slow – much like life itself.

I found that the plot, while interesting, was secondary to the characters themselves. I found myself truly caring whether Jess, Ella, and their friends were enjoying their days or suffering through them. (Again, like life, they do some of both.)

Ms. Gold – you've written yourself another winner. I am looking forward to the sequel (which I understand is already underway …)

RATING: 5 stars.

Just Girls edition by Rachel Gold Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Loved the politics, but the writing was pretty bad. So much detail about food and architecture, whole dialog remained super sparse. Probably a good intro to pretty much every queer women's issue for young people.
I loved it so much. The characters are really believable and it's just refreshing to read a book about lgbt issues that is about youth but isn't about coming out. The terms were up to date as well and everything was politically correct which was a positive
Overall just amazing
Loved it
I liked the book and story. It seems appropriately written as a juvenile fiction touching on some important issues of being transgender. The story covers some of the biases and conflicts of coming out or being identified publicly without getting too heavy on the challenges an individual likely truly does face.
This was a fantastic read. Just when you think this is your typical atypical romance, Gold tosses things upside down. Totally eye-opening look at the realities Trans folk face, and the lengths some could go to support them. Highly recommended.
I really enjoyed the book overall. It was nice to have a badass lesbian take a stand for transgender rights. Actually it was really nice to have a book about a trans woman in general who was not a serial killer. It was good read and will recommend it to me trans and cis friends alike.

[Spoiler] I was sad that it went all Kissing Jessica Stein on us and had Ella end up dating the straight boy. I guess it's cool that he has no problems with her being trans but me being a gay trans woman really was hoping for Ella and Tucker to be a thing.
A very well-written story. I've read this twice now, and liked it both times. Although I suspect Ms. Gold is not trans, she does an excellent job of presenting the young trans woman character realistically (as she did with Emily in Being Emily, the book to which this is a sequel). I would not necessarily make it required reading for all trans teens or anything like that, but it does accurately depict the clash of divergent ways of thinking about queer and feminist communities when it comes to trans people.
When you read the synopsis for Just Girls, you might think the hook of this story is that it’s about a transgender character. But what you’re getting into when you open this story is really so much more than that—it’s not a book hammering home anything about gender or transgender politics, it’s about these characters who just draw you in. That’s what I felt consistently throughout as I was reading the story – that I was just reading about a really interesting group of college kids, their relationships, hardships, triumphs, and all around ups and downs. And I couldn’t put the dang book down. Then after I finished it, I couldn’t stop thinking about the characters. For me, that’s what counts as an amazing read.
